The difference between facing a fish and a reg: the new installment of 'Analysis with Pastorcito'

The prestigious poker player and professional coach Juan Martín Pastor

Argentina
, known in his online grinder days as “xPastorcitox”, continues with his weekly installments of the section he has decided to name “Analysis with Pastorcito”. On this occasion, Juan brings a particular situation to learn how to differentiate play against a fish from play against a reg.

In his previous installments, Pastorcito had emphasized several fundamental aspects such as understanding the opponent’s play and the actions that can be taken based on that. This new installment again illustrates how the strategy of a hand can change depending on whether the opponent is an experienced reg or an inexperienced fish.

To exemplify this, the former PokerStars SuperNove Elite presents a spot where we make a c-bet with 10 3 from the button after having opened and defended the BB, on a flop 9 Q 3. After the BB calls on the flop, the turn brings the 10 that completes two pair.

This is where the differentiation between strategy against a fish and strategy against a reg can be made. The fish tends to defend too much, both preflop and on the flop. This is why the hand gains much more value against opponents who might be defending a queen with a low kicker. On the other hand, against a reg the strategy changes, because they have many better hands, such as QT, Q9, and even T9 and J8 in their range. While the fish, besides those hands, has a whole set of marginal hands that they will also defend.

“At this point, against a reg, it would be quite clear that betting the turn would benefit us more because we would continue to get value against all queens and pair + draw hands and there aren’t many bluffs available from their side. So it makes much more sense to try to get value here with the turn bet and check behind on the river. Now, against a fish the path changes a bit because, definitely, we have three barrels,” explained Pastorcito.
