Poker players show their concern about the advancement of AI

In recent weeks, the development of Artificial Intelligence has taken a prominent place at the center of public discussion both in the United States and in other parts of the world. It all started when the company Anthropic, owner of the Claude model, released a comprehensive report of more than 150 pages listing numerous “misuses” of AI, where several people began using the tool to carry out cyberterrorist attacks and even to illegally design and guide missiles.

This led to a new discussion, raised by Dario Amodei

United States
, one of the owners and the public face of Anthropic, who indicates that humanity must slow down the development of Artificial Intelligence to ensure its safety and control.

The debate about AI

The owner of one of the main Artificial Intelligence companies published an article stating that all companies in the field must agree to limit the development of these models before it is too late and they cannot be controlled. He also calls on governments to exercise greater control over companies to ensure that safety measures are met.

“We must regulate the advancement of the frontier. I have written a new essay on why the AI industry should go slower, with a three-part plan to do so,” Amodei wrote.

This sparked a huge global debate on the topic. Even the former president Donald Trump

United States
declared himself completely against Amodei’s proposal. “The people who say AI is going to destroy the world and that Data Centers are bad for your neighborhood are the same ones who said the world was going to end because of ‘climate change’,” the president wrote on his social media.

He added: “The only control AI needs is a smart president, and the US already has one. The Trump administration has prevented AI people from doing bad things, like Dario from Anthropic, who now pretends to be a ‘perfect angel.’ There is a conspiracy against AI and Data Centers and the only one happy about it is China.”

The reaction of the players

When Anthropic shared the article detailing the various cases of misuse of artificial intelligence, many people began to respond and interact with the news. One of them was professional player Scott Seiver

United States
, who stated the following:

“Reading, or at least taking a general look at the main points of this article is absolutely necessary for anyone who wants to have an opinion about our current state of AI. If this doesn’t give you chills, you should ask yourself why not.”

For his part, Doug Polk

United States
analyzed the situation from the professional gambler’s point of view, but his analysis was not very optimistic either.

“Following the AI matter. There is a large percentage of people who believe there is a 5-10% chance that AI will extinguish humanity. There are a good number of people who believe those chances are 0%. I, assuming the truth is somewhere in between, wonder: what would be the acceptable percentage risk of it killing us all? 0.1%, 1%, 10%?

I feel that even the smallest chance should be taken extremely seriously if we are talking about bad outcomes. Maybe my career as a gambler makes me feel the risk more, but I am not comfortable with there being a 1 in 100 chance it kills us all.

I am also interested in knowing about realistic ways to mitigate it. If there is no path forward maybe we should consider leaving it there. But I do believe the most responsible move would be to seriously think about how to prevent a real-life terminator.”

More recently, and somewhat disconnected from the debate about the future of AI, Scott Seiver wrote again about LLM models, but referring to their everyday use.

“‘Any art made by a large group increases its chances of being unremarkable. Art created by one person or a small group with a singular vision has many more chances of being bad or a masterpiece, but it always has many more chances of being interesting.’ Ryan Letourneau wrote this about something completely different from what I am thinking now, but it basically reminds me of how I feel about the use of LLMs everywhere. We are sacrificing extremes for something acceptably average and, in doing so, we have paid the price of losing the spark or wit,” Seiver wrote.
