Tres apuestas, grandes decisiones: las nuevas claves para hacer 3-bet

Modern poker changes fast. What was practically a winning formula five years ago can now become a costly mistake if it is not adapted to the context. And one of the moves that best reflects this evolution is the famous 3-bet.

In a recent article published on Poker.org, player and author Topher Goggin

delved into this concept alongside experienced coach Alexander Fitzgerald

, explaining why recreational players should continue using the 3-bet… but in a much smarter way.

A familiar spot

The situation is known to any tournament player: someone opens the pot, we receive a playable hand — but not premium — and the classic doubt appears. Call, fold, or raise?

For years, Fitzgerald recommended attacking aggressively with 3-bets in position against weak opponents, especially in low stakes tournaments. The reason? Previously, most players avoided getting involved without premium hands and the 3-bet almost automatically isolated the initial aggressor.

This allowed playing heads-up, with position and betting initiative, an extremely profitable combination. But the ecosystem changed.

“Today players participate much more in 3-bet pots,” Goggin explains on Poker.org. Cold calls, light four-bets, and multiway pots have become much more frequent, especially in recreational fields where many want to “see the flop no matter what.”

And here the new problem appears: a 3-bet with a marginal hand can end up creating a huge multiway pot out of position. What was once a profitable play can now turn into a strategic nightmare.

That is why the current key is not to stop 3-betting, but to understand when to do it.

The article suggests paying special attention to the players yet to act. If the opponents in the blinds and button usually fold to reraises, then the 3-bet remains an excellent weapon to isolate. But if the table is full of “curious” players, it might be better to just call and see a cheap flop with hands that connect well.

Here come suited connectors, suited aces, and connected broadways, ideal hands to play multiway because they can form strong draws or hidden monsters.

On the other hand, hands like A-9 offsuit lose much value when several players enter the pot.

The final lesson from Goggin and Fitzgerald is clear: today’s poker demands fewer automatisms and more context reading. The 3-bet remains one of the most powerful weapons in the game… but in 2026, using it without thinking can be very costly.
