After decades sharing tables with the best in the world, Barny Boatman

United Kingdom
and Joe Beevers
United Kingdom
have stories to fill several books. The original members of The Hendon Mob participated in a conversation organized by PartyPoker on the occasion of its upcoming 25th anniversary and shared several gems about characters like Phil Hellmuth
United States
, Daniel Negreanu
Canada
, Doyle Brunson
United States
and Phil Ivey

.

One of the most curious stories features Hellmuth. Beevers recalled the recordings of Late Night Poker around 2001, when the American arrived as a guest in an environment dominated by the British.

Far from the explosive TV character, Beevers assured that Hellmuth appeared calm, polite, and even “humble” during a group dinner in Cardiff. Boatman agreed… except with one word: he assured he would never accept placing “humble” and “Phil Hellmuth” in the same sentence.

He also recalled when he gave him a poker storybook. Hellmuth looked at it and responded with a phrase much more in line with his character: “I don’t read books. I write them.”

About Daniel Negreanu, Boatman highlighted that his famous talkative personality is not a TV construction. From his early years, he was friendly and approachable, although he acknowledged that his perception changed over time due to the Canadian’s tendency to comment on practically any topic.

The image of Doyle Brunson, on the other hand, remained intact. Beevers recalled that the godfather of poker always found time to stop, chat, sign an autograph, or dedicate one of his books to a fan.

Ivey vs. Clinton: an expensive meet and greet

But perhaps the best story belongs to Phil Ivey. According to Boatman, former US president Bill Clinton

United States
wanted to meet him during a visit to Las Vegas. Ivey proposed playing poker. Clinton couldn’t. Then golf appeared as an alternative.

Ivey’s response was legendary: US$100,000 per hole.

Clinton rejected the bet and the meeting never happened. Because when it comes to Ivey, apparently even meeting a former president required some action.
