EntreManos: Cheko Aguirre rompe el silencio sobre su polémica

Sergio «Cheko» Aguirre

México
, founder of the Comunidad Póker México and an active player in the national circuit, sat down with Paul de León
México
, host of EntreManos, the streaming program on YouTube, to speak exclusively about the episode that most impacted his career: the proven use of multiple accounts during an online tournament, revealed a few months ago and which led to a wave of criticism that cost him relationships, business, and part of his reputation in the industry.

EntreManos has managed to create a space for direct conversation with the most media-covered and controversial figures in Mexican poker, with a format that prioritizes open confrontation over diplomatic notes, allowing the interviewee to answer without cuts to the most uncomfortable questions of their recent history.

The conversation, led by De León for just over an hour and twenty minutes, reviewed the origin of Comunidad Póker México, the multi-account episode and its repercussions, and ended with an announcement that surprised the host himself: Aguirre’s decision to stop considering himself a regular player.

What I did was wrong: it is taking advantage over others

Aguirre explained that the incident occurred on a Sunday night, during his usual session on mobile apps, when he decided to open two emulators to register with two different accounts in the same tournament (a main Sunday event on a mobile platform), an event in which he had not had results for some time.

-The mechanics and the intention

According to his account, the goal was not to transfer chips between accounts or benefit one from the other, but simply to have two chances to advance in the same tournament. One of the accounts was eliminated before the prize bubble; the other reached the final table and cashed a paid spot. Aguirre was explicit in labeling the practice: “It is wrong, it is taking advantage”, pointing out that it represented an unfair advantage over players who only had one entry after the break, even if they could rebuy.

-An old practice that I did not invent

The interviewee emphasized that multi-accounting is not a practice he originated, but a problem with more than a decade of history in online poker, although he acknowledged that this does not justify his wrong action.

“I lost negotiations, coverage, and sponsorships”

-The day after

Aguirre specified that the controversy did not explode the same night, but the next afternoon, when another user posted a video on social media showing close-ups of his screens with the two accounts open. According to him, that person later contacted him privately to apologize for the magnitude the exposure took; Aguirre responded that he acted correctly by exposing it.

-The real cost

Regarding the consequences, he was direct: “I know I made a mistake, I know I committed a fault, I took responsibility”. He detailed that he lost negotiations, coverage, and sponsorships, as well as relationships with prominent players with whom he did business and who decided to distance themselves after the episode. Aguirre categorically denied additional accusations circulated against him, such as operating a Ponzi scheme or stealing money from players.

-The pause in Puerto Escondido

After several difficult months, Aguirre temporarily moved to Puerto Escondido (between June and December last year), a period he described not as an escape, but as a need to reorganize. There, he said, he organized the first professional structure tournament in the area and developed other projects before returning again to Mexico City.

“I don’t ask for forgiveness, I ask for empathy”

Asked if he feels he has already “paid” for his mistake, Aguirre was emphatic that this is a judgment that belongs only to him, not to others: “I do not ask for people’s forgiveness, I simply ask for empathy and the awareness that we all make mistakes”.

-A parallel with his personal history

In one of the most personal moments of the interview, Aguirre revealed that he is a recovering alcoholic, with six years of sobriety since 2021, and drew a parallel between that process and the current one: in both cases, he said, there was damage caused, apologies offered — accepted by some, not by others — and the decision to move forward in peace with himself.

“Today I tell you that I officially retire”

The most newsworthy moment of the talk came when Aguirre announced, exclusively for the program, that he stops considering himself a professional or regular player, where he has achieved notable titles in some of the country’s most prominent events, including winning the Main Event of the Nuevo Vallarta Tour in January 2024.

-From competing to operating

According to his explanation, a conversation with his life and poker coach led him to conclude that most who try to live entirely from this activity actually “survive” from it, and that the money that now supports his main assets comes from his projects as an ambassador, promoter, and organizer, not from his results at the table.

-The new focus

Aguirre said he will continue playing, but recreationally and without the pressure of depending on a result, while focusing his energy on training alongside organizers like Fernando Obando

and Marcelo Silva

with the goal of developing poker room venues and festivals at the level of international circuits in Mexico.

“I want to tell the whole community that if at any time I disrespected you or hurt you because of the person I was, give me a second chance to show you that people mature, that people change, and that they want to be better than what people think of them”, Aguirre concluded.
