Sometimes stories of overcoming are about people who managed to overcome great adversities throughout their lives to ultimately reach the top. Other times they are much simpler, like the story of Michael McQuaid

United States
, who won a tournament after being injured escaping the attack of a wild raccoon.

Michael was calmly walking his dog when a huge and aggressive raccoon appeared on the street and started chasing them. This caused Mike to trip and fall to the ground, which caused him a shoulder injury that required medical intervention. McQuaid not only survived the fierce attack but even went on to win a poker tournament that same night.

In an interview with American media, McQuaid told the full story:

“My dog stopped to bark at a tree and when I looked to the left I saw two huge raccoons. One of them started coming down from the tree and I knew there was going to be trouble. I started running as fast as I could and when I turned around to see if it was still chasing us I lost my balance, fell, and completely dislocated my shoulder,” said a now calm McQuaid.

Once recovered, and with all his plans for the day canceled, Michael headed to the MGM National Harbor and registered for a $200 daily tournament. Incredibly, McQuaid ended up beating all his rivals and was crowned champion, winning a $3,000 prize.

But beyond the prize, Michael McQuaid got the perfect ending to the best anecdote of his year. He was chased by a raccoon and won a poker tournament on the same day.
