Are we going through a new poker boom? Phil Hellmuth fueled the debate

For many, the poker industry fed on the remains of what was the poker boom of the beginning of the century. After Chris Moneymaker

United States
won the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) Main Event having qualified through an online satellite, millions of players decided to join this exciting game. Then came a plateau where new registrations stagnated and we began to always see the same faces… until now, that we are living through another boom, or at least that is what Phil Hellmuth
United States
believes.

The all-time WSOP bracelet leader expressed his opinion regarding this topic, stating that poker is currently in the middle of a boom.

Phil wrote on X: «We are in the middle of a new poker boom right now. It started in 2020 when everyone was forced to stay at home during the pandemic and ‘found poker’. There were no clubs, parties, or much social contact, so why not play poker with friends online or in person? High school and college kids found poker for the first time. And those who ‘used to play but quit or played less’ returned to the game and discovered they were better than they used to be, due to their maturity and life lessons. The vast majority of us became better at poker and money management and learned lessons the hard way. Hard lessons have been learned and difficult challenges have been overcome, which generates better poker through the development of patience, self-control, and better money management»

While it seems like a fairly optimistic point of view, not everyone agreed. Mike Matusow

United States
was one of the first to respond.

«Buddy, I love you but I totally disagree. To me, everyone is playing tournaments buried in makeup with their backers, while all cash games are now private and good players are not welcome. Also, the tournament boom is about backers giving infinite bullets, otherwise tournaments would also be in trouble. I hope I’m wrong, but what’s the boom in that?»

While it is true that many new players arrived at online rooms starting from the pandemic, there is no talk of sustained growth, like the one that occurred in the first online poker boom. However, it is also true that for years many figures have been trying to force a «new poker boom» and it is most likely that this new boom will occur for natural and unpredictable reasons, such as a pandemic or a Chris Moneymaker doing something that no one had ever done before, rather than by a producer wanting to make «the new Rounders».
