In recent years, the debate about the difficulty of making a living from poker today has been fueled. Many old-school players, who lived through the golden years of the online poker boom, claim that it used to be much easier to get results, due to the low level of players in general, and that, over time, that level rose until it became really difficult to dedicate oneself to the game professionally. But Benjamin Rolle
Recently, the CoinPoker ambassador used his social media to launch a new post questioning this thought. «‘Poker became so hard’. WRONG! Poker games were never as EASY as they are these days. And there are several reasons».
1) Solvers and Schools
Yes, it’s easier than ever to learn how to play poker. BUT people are also lazier. Look, society is becoming fatter and less healthy, despite having an infinite number of health apps, videos, courses and all kinds of tools to make it easier to have a healthy life. This gives people an illusion that they can put in little effort and get great results. It’s wrong. Great effort and consistency are still necessary. Most see a shortcut, a magic pill. They get the newest fitness tracker, take their supplements or take a course and think they are going to reach their dream weight. It’s wrong. And I see the same in poker. Just because they’ve watched an overwhelming amount of videos, coaches, solvers, programs and other tools doesn’t mean people play better. I think people believe these things are going to make them magically better. They are useful for those who understand how to use these resources and work with effort and consistency.
2) Marketing
More and more sites are launching big promotions. Ten years ago, we had only one really big poker site. Now, yes, we have the market leader, but the gap is not as wide as it was ten years ago. Live poker is also growing. There are more and more opportunities for people to choose profitable games, tournaments and online series.

3) Content and Streamers
More and more people are showing their journey in poker through social media. I don’t need to tell you the positive impact this has on making the game easier.
4) Prize Pools
Ten years ago we were playing $500 and $1,000 tournaments as the most expensive of the week. Today there are $5k, $10k, $25k every week. We are playing for hundreds of thousands of dollars in every tournament every week. Before, the Sunday Million was the big tournament of the week. Today we have weekly events on 4 or 5 different sites.
And, if you ask me, I would say the level has become significantly softer. If you invest 100 hours of high-quality study today, you could get further than you would in ten years».
Nowadays it’s normal to hear that everyone plays better thanks to solvers and the content available on the internet. But, are players really disciplined? What percentage of players in a tournament really invest the necessary study hours? Perhaps Benjamin Rolle is closer to the truth than many would believe.
