For decades, poker had a characteristic that set it apart from other casino games: its players could become stars. It was not only important to win, but also how to do it. Personality, skill, stories, and even a certain dose of extravagance built characters capable of transcending the tables.
Stu Ungar perfectly represents that era. His extraordinary talent and defiant attitude turned him into an almost mythological figure. The player could build his reputation directly in the casino: talking, intimidating, reading opponents, and finally proving that behind the character there were results.
The internet changed the rules
With the expansion of online poker, much of the visible psychological component disappeared. A nickname could hide a global phenomenon, and strategy began to gain even more prominence. The case of Viktor “Isildur1” Blom was probably one of the first great examples: a player could become a celebrity from a computer, facing the biggest stars on the planet without needing to appear in front of a camera.
But social media caused a second transformation. Now, playing well is no longer enough. Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu, for example, understood that personality could also be transferred to the digital ecosystem. YouTube, X, Instagram, podcasts, and streams allow maintaining a narrative even when they are not playing.
Others took different paths. Dan Bilzerian built a huge audience using provocation and personal exposure, while figures like Jennifer Tilly and Victoria Coren Mitchell combined poker, television, and entertainment.
Here appears an interesting paradox: digital poker eliminated part of the live spectacle, but social media ended up multiplying it.
Today, names like Tom Dwan , Fedor Holz or Negreanu himself represent different versions of the modern player. There is no longer a single formula to become a star, although there does seem to be an additional requirement: you have to be relevant both on and off the tables.
And the next change is already looming. Artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and new platforms will again change the way poker is consumed. The rebel of the future will probably still need the same as Ungar decades ago: talent and personality.
