To delve deeper into the current investment and market landscape in our region, we spoke exclusively with Thomas Corona, VP of Business Development for Southern LATAM at ATFX. In a revealing conversation, the specialist reflected on the vital role of financial education, taught how to identify scammers disguised as content creators, and reviewed the unstoppable growth of trading in Latin America.
-How has the way people discover trading changed?
-Today content creators and influencers play a huge role. They are the ones out there evangelizing and educating about trading and financial markets. I find it very positive because they are helping to increase financial literacy, something that has historically been quite low in Latin America compared to other markets.
-What are the main mistakes of those who start to get interested in the markets?
-The main mistake is starting by thinking about how much money they can make, instead of how much they are willing to risk and what their goal is. Before investing, they should have a plan: define whether they want to invest short or long term, how much capital they are willing to risk, and what strategy they will follow. These are very basic concepts and relatively easy to learn, but they can make a huge difference.

-What role do education, communities, and content creators have today?
-They are fundamental. Today a person can learn about markets and share experiences with a community in a way that simply didn’t exist before. But you also have to learn to distinguish between those who are really educating and those who are selling an expectation. There are many creators who show false results or an unrealistic view of trading. That is why financial education also means learning to identify reliable sources and recognize true educators versus scammers.
-What should a person consider when choosing a broker or platform?
-Mainly regulation, fund security, transparency in costs and operating conditions. They should also review the platform, available instruments, and quality of customer service. They should not choose a broker solely because of a bonus, promotion, or low spread.
-How do we see the evolution of trading in Latin America?
-It is something that personally makes me very happy to see. When I started in this industry, practically no one knew what trading was. Today it is completely different. Once I was in an Uber in Brazil and saw that the driver had two cell phones: one with the Uber app and another with the markets open, where he even had a gold trade. In Ecuador or Colombia, you can sit in a café and hear people talking about trading. And in Argentina, I have heard young people discussing the cryptocurrencies they were investing in.
For me, those small moments are a sign of the impact the industry is having. Trading and financial markets are becoming a much more common conversation in Latin America, and one of the things I like most about my job is being able to see that evolution and the impact it is having on society.
