“You should raise 3 times the big blind and add one big blind for each limper; if you are out of position, you add another one,” Jaka explained when presenting this rule, intended as a practical guide and not a mathematical obligation.
The example he provides helps to understand it immediately. If three players just call before it’s your turn to act, then the raise should no longer be 3x, but 6x the big blind. And if you are also out of position, that raise becomes 7x. In a hand with blinds of 50/100 from the small blind, that translates to a raise to 700 points.

The interesting thing is that Jaka does not present this formula as an unbreakable law, but as a structure to better think about the game. In tournaments with short stacks, for example, the starting point changes. “In a tournament where stacks are short, the base raise is usually 2.5x or even 2x,” he noted, making it clear that effective depth rules.
In the opposite case, when playing a cash game with very deep stacks —for example, 300 big blinds— the coach recommends starting from a higher base: 4x the big blind.
The underlying message is clear. As Jaka himself summarized, it is not a strict rule, but a reference that allows for better adjustment of sizes according to limpers, position, and the type of game.
