He lost his entire bankroll three times and recovered it: the story of Francisco Benítez

Francisco Benítez

Uruguay
is one of the most recognized poker players in all of South America. He currently holds the top spot on Uruguay’s All Time Money List, with US$3,646,475 in accumulated cashes. Tomatee, as his friends know him, gave an interview to Pamela Balzano
Argentina
within the framework of the last Enjoy Poker Tour. In it, he recalled one of the wildest stages of his career: when he lost his entire bankroll three times, only to recover it later.

During this calm and relaxed chat, Pamela asked a very specific question: “Did you ever bust your entire bankroll?”.

Benítez’s answer not only gives an idea of what can happen when one is young and just starting out in poker, but also serves as an example of what can be achieved with the right mindset.

«Yes, yes. Well, in different magnitudes of money, but for me it was the same because it meant ending up with zero. It all happened when I was young, from 18 to 21. In that era I told you I was young and so on. There, in those three years, I busted three times. US$5K, US$35K and US$180K. Quite a lot».

Pamela took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of mindset in a poker player’s career.

«Motivation is very important. And obviously, when you’re younger, your mind works much faster, responds much more, learns much faster. I believe anything can be achieved, if you’re reasonably capable, if you have that luck, so to speak. If you set your mind to it, are motivated, and truly dedicate time and effort, I believe you can achieve anything,” Benítez stated.
