Few things seem more unlikely in the poker world than seeing Allen Kessler

turning down free money. However, that was exactly what happened this week in Las Vegas…

The popular American player declined an invitation to participate in The Victor, the new televised cash game series that the World Poker Tour will record at the Palms Casino Resort. And it was not just any invitation: the offer included a $10,000 freeroll to play a heads-up match against Matt Savage

The news was officially announced by the WPT itself through a statement. According to the show’s format, two prominent rivals each receive a $5,000 stack to face five professional players in $25/$50 cash game tables. At the end of the session, the competitor with the most chips takes both stacks.

Initially, Kessler had shown interest in participating, but ultimately decided to withdraw due to possible conflicts with his tournament schedule in Las Vegas.

The word of the protagonists

Savage, WPT Tournament Director and one of the participants, did not hide his surprise. In a post on X he wrote: “ClubWPT Gold offered me a $10,000 freeroll to play against Allen Kessler in a grudge match this week and he declined because he believes he has positive EV in poker tournaments. How crazy is this guy?”

The disbelief was widespread. Many users on social media refused to believe that Kessler had passed up such an opportunity. Some even called the story “fake news.”

But the protagonist himself confirmed it was true. Through X, Kessler explained that he never ruled out playing the challenge, but he could not commit days in advance due to his participation in the World Series of Poker.

“I told them I would definitely do it, but I couldn’t commit to an afternoon recording days in advance. There is a possibility, however small, that I am still alive on Day 2 or even Day 3 of some WSOP event and I wouldn’t know until the last moment,” he argued.

The decision fits perfectly with the grinder’s reputation. Kessler is known for prioritizing expected value above any other consideration and for his obsessive focus on tournaments. In fact, earlier this year he stated that 2026 would finally be the season he wins his first WSOP bracelet.

Meanwhile, The Victor will start this week at the Palms and will feature other notable duels to settle rivalries at the table. But one of the matchups that generated the most anticipation will ultimately not see the light of day.
