A poker dealer was accused of causing a massive fire in California – CodigoPoker

A poker dealer became involved in an episode that has little to do with the tables. Brandon Glasgo, 30 years old, was arrested in California on suspicion of having caused the Sorrento fire, a blaze that quickly spread through an area of San Diego, threatened homes, and forced evacuation orders.

Glasgo was arrested Monday morning in connection with the fire, which had started Sunday afternoon in the Peñasquitos Creek area. According to the San Diego Police, the fire ended up affecting about 53 hectares (that is, 530,000 square meters).

The suspect, who worked as a poker dealer at the Jamul Casino Resort, a tribal casino located in Southern California, in 2019 and 2020, is charged with intentional wildfire arson and is scheduled to appear in court this Wednesday.

The fire began around 1:30 PM on Sunday, August 16, between Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Carmel Mountain Road. The flames quickly advanced through the area and generated alerts for residents.

So far, authorities have not publicly reported what element or action may have caused the fire to start, so the charge against Glasgo still needs to be substantiated during the judicial process. It is speculated that it could have been caused by a cigarette.

The speed at which the fire advanced forced the deployment of a significant operation. Firefighters and aerial units worked to contain the flames, while evacuation orders and warnings were issued for residents of nearby areas.

One of the difficulties was related to the location where the fire developed: part of the flames advanced along a hiking trail, which initially complicated access for ground teams. Five fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters were used to combat the fire.

The fire’s advance was stopped during Sunday, although the fire remained active overnight and was still active on Monday.

No victims or significant structural damage were reported as a result of the fire, although authorities had to mobilize numerous residents due to the risk that the flames would reach residential areas.

A charge, not a conviction for the poker dealer

Glasgo was arrested on suspicion of intentional arson, but the charge does not imply that he has been found guilty. Authorities still need to determine what happened and what his possible responsibility was in the origin of the fire.

According to California law, a conviction for certain arson offenses can involve several years of imprisonment, depending on the circumstances and the damage caused.

While awaiting his court appearance, Glasgo’s name became associated with an unusual story: a man who passed through the poker tables of a California casino and now faces a charge related to a fire that put an entire sector of San Diego on alert.
