For about a year now, American poker players have been suffering from the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”. It is an amendment to the current tax law, which makes people only able to deduct 90% of their gambling losses, instead of 100%, as was historically done. This caused many players to pay taxes on money they did not win.
After months of debate, finally, the first step was approved for a new project called “Big Tax Bill”, which seeks to remove the current 90% rule and return to the previous state of affairs, at least in this regard.
The initiative received strong support from both parties, Democrats and Republicans alike. The vote obtained a total of 38 votes in favor of the amendment and only 5 against. Naturally, several poker players shared the news with great enthusiasm.
Players’ Reaction
Daniel Negreanu
“The 5 votes against should be forced to explain their logic and why they think it is fair and appropriate for people to pay taxes on income they did not generate. A guy bets $1000 and loses. Then bets another $1000 and wins. He is even. And they want him to pay taxes? Explain yourselves.”

Apparently, players received the news with great enthusiasm, but chose to focus on the five legislators who voted no, rather than celebrate the first step. Which is understandable, because this vote guarantees nothing.
The project will now be taken to the full House for a complete vote to obtain its final approval.
