Recently, many poker players have entered the debate about what characteristics a person must have to be successful at the tables. Many talk about study, others talk about volume, while others consider that the key piece is bankroll management. But the debate is so broad that it lends itself to all kinds of opinions, and professional Patrick Leonard 
Patrick Leonard’s message
“I think one of the most important skills you can have in poker is being good at changing your mind. Poker players spend too much time trying to be right. We debate hands, defend our lines, discuss strategies, and sometimes let part of our ego depend on whether our original opinion is right or not”.
“But I think the best players I’ve been around are quite the opposite. They can passionately believe in something on Monday, see better evidence on Tuesday, and completely abandon the idea by Wednesday. No ego, no trying to justify whether they were right or wrong. No moving goalposts. They simply admit ‘yes, I was wrong’.”
“I think that is an incredibly powerful skill. Poker changes so fast and there is so much information that it’s almost impossible for everything you believe today to still be true in a few years. I’ve had strategies I was convinced were good, probably taught them to others with a lot of conviction, and six months later I realized I was completely wrong”.
“I don’t think it’s shameful. In fact, I think being able to do that was one of the reasons that allowed me to keep improving. The dangerous player is not the one who makes mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. The dangerous player is the one who needs to keep being right, even when the evidence has already changed.”
“Your job is not to defend the player you were yesterday. Your job is to make the player you will be tomorrow better. So have conviction in what you believe. Defend your position. Try to prove it. Challenge other people’s ideas. But when someone shows you something better, don’t fight to protect your opinion. Steal theirs.”
“Being wrong one day costs you nothing. Being stubborn and not changing your mind can cost you years.”
