Alabama opens a new door to sports betting after the primary elections

Sports betting may have found a new opportunity in Alabama

United States
. After the Republican primary elections, several candidates favorable to the expansion of gaming managed to prevail at the polls after receiving strong financial backing from industry giants like DraftKings and FanDuel.

According to Bloomberg reports, the political committee American Conservative Fund, funded by some of the country’s leading online betting companies, invested $9.3 million in support of Republican candidates during the campaign. The political bet seems to have paid off: many of those candidates advanced and could shift the balance within the state legislature.

This is significant in a state where attempts to legalize casinos and sports betting have been failing for several years. Both the Alabama House of Representatives and Senate have a strong Republican majority, so many of the primary winners also appear as favorites for the November general elections.

How the battle for betting in Alabama continues

However, the path is still far from easy. The Alabama Constitution, in effect since 1901, prohibits lotteries and much of the activities related to gambling. In fact, the state is one of only five in the entire United States that still does not have a state lottery.

Currently, there are only three tribal casinos operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, with no presence of traditional commercial operators. Even so, the political debate around gaming continues, and since 2021 at least one bill per year has been introduced to expand legal betting options.

The most recent attempt occurred this year when Senator Merika Coleman pushed a bill to allow citizens to vote on the creation of a lottery and the expansion of legal gambling. “I believe the people of Alabama should have the opportunity to decide,” the legislator said. However, the proposal did not advance in March.

Supporters of legalization argue that the economic impact would be enormous. A report published in 2020 estimated that legal gaming could generate up to $700 million in tax revenue and create about 19,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, sports betting continues to grow in the rest of the country. Since the Supreme Court removed the federal ban limiting betting outside Nevada in 2018, the market has exploded: currently 39 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico have some form of regulation.

Additionally, the American Gaming Association recently reported that commercial sports betting generated $16.89 billion in revenue during 2025, a 22.7% increase from the previous year. And now Alabama could start looking at that business with new eyes.
