You make a mistake and blame variance. Results do not always equate to skill. This makes it very easy to make excuses. The best players in the world are extremely self-aware and take responsibility. When they make a mistake, they blame themselves, look for ways to improve, and grow.”
2. Having an open mind
“Poker is a very complex game. Even the best regularly learn new things. If you learn from others, lower your ego, and always try to get the best answer regardless of what you have learned before, you will go far in poker,” Cates continued.

3. Obsession with learning
“The best players in the world went through a period where they studied a lot. If you want to be better than most, you need to know more than most. It’s simple,” Jungleman wrote regarding study, a fundamental pillar in today’s competitive poker.
4. Understanding the importance of mindset
“Poker can be extremely mentally challenging. Imagine telling a poker player that by the end of the month, after having done a great job, they owe their boss US$10K. The mental and financial pressure, the constant self-doubt, and many other emotions are very present in today’s poker players.
Therefore, it is extremely important to build a strong mental game and learn to deal with emotions.”
5. Underestimating yourself rather than overestimating
“This is common among successful people. Doubting yourself more than you value yourself. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have confidence, but thinking you are always the best makes growing much harder,” Cates wrote.
