José Herrera conquistó la gloria en el Main de Mazatlán

José Herrera

México
was crowned champion of the Main Event at the Poker Festival held at Casino del Rey, in the port of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, a geographical entity better known as the Pearl of the Pacific. He defeated Víctor de los Santos
México
in a quick heads-up duel where only one hand was played and with that, he claimed the MXN$650,000 for the champion along with the trophy that will adorn his showcase.

The festival’s main event took place from Thursday, April 30 until its final table was decided yesterday, Monday, May 4. It had a buy-in of MXN$8,000 to guarantee an attractive prize pool of MXN$3,000,000 and offered five qualifying flights, gathering a total of 278 entries.

Although the tournament featured players from all over the country, the close fight for the title highlighted Gerardo Hernández

México
, who had just won the High Roller at this Festival, as well as the fellow Monterrey native Víctor Rodríguez
México
, who has an outstanding international resume, and Manuel Zamacona
México
, originally from Acapulco, Guerrero, who has also evolved his game and regularly participates in the best national festivals.

Once the tournament reached the final table, eight players secured a seat in this phase of the competition, which was streamed live via the PokerGo Español channel on YouTube. The minimum cash prize was already set at a very good MXN$94,500 and the tension for the title was palpable in the air.

The first to fall was Rodríguez, after playing his last 230,000 chips (5.7 BBs) from the HJ with a pair of J J and facing Zamacona who from the SB held A Q. The community cards were 9 9 K 9 Q, weakening his hand pair against that river that connected a queen to surpass him.

Some time passed before the next elimination occurred, with Ricardo Vera

México
at risk for 330,000 chips with K qc- and needing help from the community cards to beat A J of Los Santos, who comfortably covered him. Without any help, Vera stood up from his seat, followed by Manuel Zamacona, who with his A Q dominated the confrontation against De los Santos who had K J. A pot of 1,300,000 slipped away with the J on the turn, saying goodbye in 6th place with a payout of MXN$150,000.

The podium took quite a while to be defined with the exit of Víctor Osuna

México
in 4th place (MXN$231,000) playing for his 990,000 chips with a K J that, although it connected on the flop A J 2, was not enough against the A Q of Víctor de los Santos who held strong until the end. Gerardo Hernández had another great performance by finishing 3rd for a very good MXN$283,500, after his A Q had to call a bet from Herrera for a total of 2,700,000 with a superior A K and without help from the community cards, leaving him with only 1.5 BBs behind, which although he managed to recover, was not enough to fight for the trophy.

The final confrontation was extremely fast, decided in a single hand played just after returning from a short break: Herrera pressed hard from SB/BTN with his 10 4 finding an instant call from his opponent with 8 8. The flop favored José with a 2 Q 10 giving him a pair of tens and taking the lead, while the turn A and the river 10 defined the champion of this tournament.
