The historic rivalry between Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will add a very special chapter… with a Latin accent. Yuri Martins

will be the protagonist of a unique event: he will give in-person classes and host a poker competition between students from both institutions.

The event, organized by Jump Trading, will take place in Boston and will combine strategy, competition, and decision-making in an unusual academic format: poker in the classrooms.

Yuri, a partner of the company, had already worked with students in online sessions, but now he has arrived in the city to bring the experience to the in-person level. “I am very happy with this invitation. It is a place I never imagined being, much less teaching inside. The energy is different,” the Brazilian said on his social media upon arriving on campus.

A heads-up with a classic flavor

The tournament will have a heads-up format and will feature eight matches, in a round-robin system. Beyond academic pride, there will be money at stake: according to Martins, the prize pool will be between US$8,000 and US$10,000.

The venue will be Harvard, which will host the MIT representatives in a clash that mixes intellectual competition with poker skill.

The presence of poker at these universities is no coincidence. Both have clubs dedicated to the game as a tool to develop analytical, mathematical, and strategic skills.

At Harvard, the Poker Club was founded in 2020 with that goal, while at MIT there is a similar tradition with workshops and tournaments focused on decision-making.

The connection, in fact, goes back a long way. The legendary MIT Blackjack Team—made up of students from MIT, Harvard, and other institutions—became famous for applying mathematics to beat casinos for decades. Their story reached the cinema with the movie 21: Blackjack, starring Kevin Spacey.

Now, poker takes that legacy and brings it to a new generation, with Yuri Martins as a guide. Between cards, strategy, and academia, Harvard vs MIT adds a different duel… but equally competitive.
