The saga of Tom Goldstein

In his testimony, Andrew Robl stated that he coached Tom Goldstein for a series of heads-up matches played in 2016. The result of those matches was US$50 million in winnings for Goldstein, Robl, and other players who joined the action.
The matches were played against billionaire Alec Gores

Goldstein pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include tax evasion, falsification of tax returns, failure to pay taxes, and making false statements to two different mortgage lenders. Andrew Robl declined to comment to the press after testifying.

Although Robl did not speak to the press, fragments of his statement did emerge. For example, he confirmed that he and other professionals coached Goldstein to play against Gores and even bought a percentage of his action. Among those players, Phil Galfond
“I thought I could coach him to beat Alec Gores and invest in it to make some money,” Robl replied when asked why he accepted Goldstein’s offer. “His opponent had a particular style, and once we figured it out, we adapted to it. He made a lot of money,” he added.

The defense also asked Robl why he didn’t demand any signed contract when making the deal with Goldstein, to which Andrew replied that “Players just go by their word and reputation.”
