In early March, American poker received a hard blow when it was learned that the Lodge Card Club located in Austin, Texas, had been shut down following a police raid. The club, owned by professional players Doug Polk

A story that doesn’t end
Since the case gained media attention, speculation began regarding the causes that could have led to the closure of the Texas club. Initially, the first rumors indicated cases of money laundering, something that Doug Polk made sure to deny but which is still being considered in the investigations. Another possible reason was the sale of alcoholic beverages and the holding of real money poker games in a “non-private” environment, which would go against poker legislation in the state of Texas.
According to the Penal Code of the southern state, clubs can hold poker events as long as the house does not obtain direct profits through commissions. That is why clubs like The Lodge charge for the time players spend in their seats, rather than extracting rake from each pot and tournament. Apparently, this business model would not fully comply with current legislation and the club ended up in a dangerous gray area: it has not yet received a conviction but also cannot operate freely.

Polk threatens to tell all
So far, Doug Polk, the main visible face of the brand, has not expressed himself on the matter, except to deny rumors of money laundering, as he was waiting to have things a bit clearer, in addition to not wanting to hinder the investigation.
Finally, this Wednesday, March 25, the American pro threw a message through his social networks, in which he anticipates that he is almost ready to come out and tell everything that happened.
«The raid and closure of the Lodge Poker Club has been a painful process. I finally got the green light to film a video talking about everything that happened, which I will publish soon«, Polk wrote on his X account. Quickly, he began to receive responses and support from the community.

The workers, the most vulnerable link
Just three days ago, Jason Levin, one of the owners of the Lodge, announced the indefinite closure of the facilities, as he did not see reopening as viable without risking new raids. This also led to the dismissal of all club workers, as, without being able to generate income, their salaries could not be sustained.
This situation awakened the solidarity of some players in the community, who decided to start a collection through Go Fund Me to help all those people who lost their main source of income.
The campaign was started by James Galloway
«The Lodge Poker Club was recently raided, which caused its sudden closure and the loss of employment for many dedicated employees who have been part of the community for years. Families now face immediate financial hardship to cover rent, bills and daily expenses. I donated to this campaign because the cause is very important to me. If you can share or make a small contribution, this can help these employees get through this difficult time and show that the Lodge family is stronger united».
The campaign was quickly shared by many other players, including content creator Caitlin Comeskey
«It’s painful to see the Lodge staff laid off indefinitely. Many worked to turn this family business that was born in an old Blockbuster into the largest club in Texas. My husband organized a collection to help Lodge employees, in case you want to show your financial support», Comeskey wrote.
Doug Polk himself echoed the news and shared Caitlin’s post, along with the text: «I appreciate what you are doing for our staff. Thank you».
