He wants to pay off his million-dollar fraud by winning tournaments: George Janssen's unusual judicial plan

The poker world crosses paths with the police blotter once again in a story that seems written by a screenwriter with a weakness for absurd twists. George Janssen

United States
, a professional player from Michigan
United States
, a four-time WSOP Circuit ring winner, requested a lighter sentence after pleading guilty to financial institution fraud, with an argument that is already generating controversy: he wants to get out early to pay restitution for the million-dollar amount… by playing poker.

According to the case, Janssen admitted responsibility in a fraudulent scheme linked to auto loans that affected several credit unions for nearly 4 million dollars. The indictment maintains that the scheme operated between June 2016 and October 2023, when he obtained money through false representations and fraudulent promises.

The defense, according to Pokernews, asked for a 24-month sentence, well below the minimum recommendation of 51 months, ensuring that the player is already selling everything he had, is cooperating with authorities, and could generate real income competing in tournaments to return the money to the victims. His lawyer even argued before the court that Janssen has already proven he can make a living from poker and that, once out of prison, he would have access to larger stages to win even more.

The most explosive point of the case is not just the fraud. Janssen’s saga already carried an unusual episode from 2023, when he appeared beaten, bloodied, and tied with zip ties on a rural Michigan road, in an alleged story of kidnapping and extortion that later fell under a shadow of suspicion during the federal investigation.

While awaiting sentencing, he continued playing and cashing in local tournaments, adding small prizes that his defense presents as proof that poker can be a constant source of income. The question, of course, is served like an uncomfortable river: should Justice believe in a redemption plan based on chips, variance, and giant pots? In this hand, the last word will not be had by a dealer, but by a judge.

His WSOP cashes and more
