Jean-Robert Bellande No Had Planned To Play This Tournament And Ended Up Winning US$1.5M
Jean-Robert Bellande was not planning to play this tournament and ended up winning US$1.5M

Jean-Robert Bellande

United States
had traveled to the Merit Royal Diamond Casino & Spa for a quiet week of cash games, as part of the Onyx High Roller Series. However, he received a call from his friend Rob Yong
United Kingdom
, the tournament founder. which changed everything. Rob was going to play the US$100K NLH High Roller Championship, but his trip was delayed and he couldn’t make it for Day 1, so he offered Bellande the entry. The offer was too good to refuse, and Bellande had no choice but to accept.

The tournament ended up with a total of 50 entries, which were enough to cover the US$5 million guaranteed prize pool, distributed among the 8 finalists. After a hectic first day, only 11 players managed to advance to Day 2.

Bellande arrived as the mega-chipleader at the final table of 9 players, being just one elimination away from the bubble. Finally, Artur Martirosian

Russia
was eliminated on the bubble, and we got to know the eight prize winners.

Once in the money, there was a flurry of eliminations, with Gha Iakobishvili

Israel
and Biao Ding
China
busting out quickly. The eliminations continued, and Bellande remained at the top of the counts, until Rob Yong, who managed to enter the tournament just before registration closed, made it to the final table and entered heads-up as the chipleader.

However, with patient play, good runs, and a knack for identifying the right moments, Jean-Robert Bellande turned the tables and was crowned champion of the US$100K NLH High Roller Championship at the Onyx High Roller Series. For this huge victory, the player received the biggest prize of his career: US$1,500,000.

“Is it really the biggest?” he asked, surprised, upon hearing the news. “I wasn’t going to play the tournament. By the way, there’s no chance I’m going to start playing high rollers now. These guys are all superstars. But Rob’s plane was delayed and I felt bad. So I told the guys I was going to put a fish in their place,” joked the champion.
