
The case of Tom Goldstein
Through an exhaustive investigation, the prosecution managed to prove that Goldstein had won more than US$50 million in private poker games in 2016 alone, a sum for which the defendant never declared a single cent and, therefore, never paid a tax.
During a court filing this past Thursday, Goldstein’s lawyers said the government had announced that it “intends to seek the detention of defendant Thomas Goldstein pending sentencing,” which they called “completely unjustified,” as it contradicts the recommendation of Pretrial Services.
In any case, sentencing in the case could still take months, which would mean that, if the request is approved, Goldstein would spend at least several weeks in custody while awaiting punishment for the charges, which carry quite severe penalties.

Tom Goldstein Leaving The Courthouse
A Maryland judge had previously considered Goldstein a flight risk, pointing to his extensive ties abroad. The defendant’s lawyers argued that Tom had complied with the twenty conditions imposed for his release, including surrendering his passport, travel restrictions to the Washington DC area, zero contact with a list of more than 80 people, and a ban on gambling.
“Any risk in that regard has been adequately addressed so far by the numerous release conditions in effect, including travel restrictions, computer monitoring, and financial reporting,” the defendant’s lawyers stated. “This record of compliance with release conditions supports the conclusion that Mr. Goldstein is unlikely to flee,” they concluded.
“Goldstein chose fraud and deceit over honesty and attempted to defraud the American taxpayer while enjoying a lavish lifestyle,” countered prosecutor Kelly O. Hayes
