Luisa Morfin invites more female players to join and compete in this discipline

In the competitive world of poker, both genders are on equal terms to carry out the development of their skills. That is why the low female participation that we notice even today in the main festivals of the country is strange. What causes few women to dare to compete in this environment?

CodigoPoker: How do you perceive the female presence in current poker tournaments in Mexico and what factors do you think influence it still being so reduced?

Luisa: Unfortunately, it is very reduced at present; even over the years, I have noticed that it has even been decreasing, and I believe there are several factors that influence this, some of them cultural. Perhaps it could be that some women who once tried did not feel safe participating within a predominantly male environment. I think the lack of promotion of this issue by casinos and organizers can also influence it.

CodigoPoker: From your personal experience, what barriers do women who wish to compete in this environment face and how can they be overcome?

-Luisa: I believe the main barriers are cultural and also mental. Regarding the former, it refers to the fact that it remains an environment focused on the male gender; when a woman arrives at the table, you can feel how they treat you and play against you differently, making you feel like you are not at their level. But it’s all in the mind; when we start to get rid of those insecurities and realize that we have the same capabilities as they do, that’s when we can start participating at a competitive level. We can overcome this by generating a lot of volume, playing a lot, and also, in my experience, building community and friendship with all players to feel like part of a community.

CodigoPoker: What role do you consider the visibility of players like you plays in motivating more women to join the circuit?

Luisa: I would like to think it is very important, but I see that time continues to pass and very few women have been joining, so it is clear that something more is missing to achieve that goal.

CodigoPoker: What changes do you consider necessary—whether in tournament organization, in the community, or in poker culture—to encourage greater female inclusion?

-Luisa: I believe it is important to continue holding Ladies tournaments. Over time, the buy-ins were lowered, and now suddenly in the last festival, there was no Ladies tournament. It’s about building a community of women who participate, seeking outreach and so on, and in the cultural sphere, when a woman sits at the table, that the players themselves include them in the development of the action as an equal.
