Rafa Moraes: «Poker is entertainment, it's people, and in Bahia with Carnival it had to be like this»

The BSOP Summer bet big, and the gamble paid off perfectly. Bahia, beaches, a luxury hotel, massive fields… and as a grand finale, a Carnival party that gave a unique identity to a stop that is already historic for Brazilian and Latin American poker. After the festival concluded, CodigoPoker spoke with Rafa Moraes

Brazil
, one of the circuit’s main driving forces, who did not hide his happiness.

“I am very happy, very happy. It was a dream to hold this stage, it was a big bet, and it came true. We put on a beautiful event in Bahia, in the northeast of Brazil, with a party, Carnival… we truly showed that Brazilian side that the world knows,” he said.

And of course, the CarnaBSOP was not just a simple addition for the serial’s director…

“I really like parties. Poker is entertainment, it’s fun, it’s a game of people. And in Bahia, with a trio elétrico and Carnival, it makes even more sense. I think we closed it with a flourish,” he explained, leaving the door open to repeating the experience: “Who knows about other events, maybe in São Paulo, but we will definitely do it again at next year’s BSOP Summer.”

Beyond the color and music, the sporting aspect marked a before and after for the region. Moraes stated: “It was the biggest Main Event and the biggest prize pool outside the state of São Paulo. We started off on the right foot: a R$25,000 tournament with R$1,000,000 for the champion, the biggest tournament in the history of the northeast.”

But for him, the most important thing goes beyond the numbers. “When you bet big on a dream, things can turn out well. People came, the hotel was wonderful, the pools, the beaches… I think everyone left very happy, and that is the main objective,” he emphasized.

Rafa Moraes and what’s next for the BSOP

With the success confirmed, Moraes is already thinking about the circuit’s future: “The goal is to grow more and more. To have a bigger Championship, a bigger Main Event, to bring more foreign players. Who knows, maybe in a few years the Super High Roller Series will also come here… These are ideas and goals we have.”

And what about Rafa the player? Although he is one of the most recognized faces in Latin American poker, his current role leaves him little time to sit down and play. “It’s getting harder and harder to play a lot. I love to play, but the complexity of the event grows, many things happen at the same time. Still, when I have a gap, I end up playing,” he confessed.

Amidst records, beaches, and samba, the BSOP Summer made it clear that poker can be a high-level competition… and also a spectacle. And if it depends on Rafa Moraes, that mix has only just begun.
