Smartphones are driving the expansion of the global online poker market

A study projects significant expansion of the online poker market in the coming years. According to Custom Market Insights, a consulting and intelligence firm operating across various sectors, the segment is expected to grow from US$6.3 billion in 2025 to US$22.4 billion in 2034.

The report estimates an average compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.2% for the sector during this period. The advancement of high-tech entertainment and the popularization of smartphones explain the increase in demand.

“With the growing popularity of smartphones, increased internet availability, and rising demand for online entertainment, online poker is likely to experience significant growth in the coming years,” the study notes.

The report also highlights market consolidation and diversification of offerings. “As the online poker ecosystem matures, both established operators and new entrants are entering the market, increasing the sector’s diversity and making the environment more competitive and inclusive.”

According to the analysis, Texas Hold’em continues to grow, while other variants such as Omaha and Seven Card Stud are also expected to increase. CMI highlights North America and Asia as the main drivers of expansion.

Latin America, on the other hand, also shows gradual, but steady, growth in the online poker market, driven by increased smartphone adoption, greater internet coverage, and growing interest in digital entertainment.

Roadblocks for Online Poker

While optimistic, the report points to some obstacles to the sector’s growth, such as the recent discovery of a bot operation in Siberia and unfair practices, including the use of real-time assistance (RTA), multiple accounts, and ghosting. The prohibition of virtual games is also a cause for concern.

According to CMI, restrictions on the sector could limit market advancement. India, for example, banned online poker in 2025, and the country’s Supreme Court is still analyzing the matter. Finally, payment processing issues may pose additional challenges, as financial institutions and governments continue to impose restrictions and regulations on the industry.
