The glamour of Las Vegas
As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the attackers contacted the company last Friday and set Monday as the deadline. So far it is not clear if the payment was made or if there were new demands. Wynn has not issued official comments.
According to the specialized outlet The Register, the criminals allegedly accessed full names, emails, phone numbers, job titles, salaries, employment start dates, and even staff birthdays. Access was reportedly gained in September through a vulnerability. For now, it has not been confirmed if customer information was also compromised.

The blow is not only reputational. The company also faces a class-action lawsuit in Nevada. A California resident accuses the company of negligence, unjust enrichment, and invasion of privacy, among other charges.
The Wynn case is not isolated. In 2023, seven out of ten cyberattacks worldwide were of the ransomware type, with more than 317 million attempts recorded. Between 2022 and 2023, hackers reportedly collected US$1.100 million in ransoms. However, fewer and fewer companies are willing to pay: in the last quarter of 2023, only 29% of attacks ended in payouts.
Las Vegas already has recent precedents
MGM Resorts International suffered losses close to US$100 million after an attack in 2023, while Caesars Entertainment paid US$15 million to regain control of its systems. According to The Register, ShinyHunters is also allegedly behind those incidents.
Not even online operators are safe. PokerStars faced hacking attempts during the 2022 WCOOP, and PokerGO suffered a DDoS attack in the middle of the WSOP Main Event final table.
